About Neo
What is Neo
Neo is a system for creating and delivering engaging and richly interactive learning activities over the Web. Although it concerns itself primarily with educational interactions, it also supports student administration functions.
Why use Neo?
Neo was developed by Information & Education Services to provide a customised, flexible and powerful teaching and learning system. Neo exists to reduce the time it takes to develop innovative educational online-applications by providing optional components. These components offer functions commonly found in, and well suited for educational applications. In theory, you could design your own educational online-application and write your own software to achieve a particular goal but Neo is likely to provide most of what you need so why re-invent the wheel?
Who can use Neo?
The Neo system has been designed to allow academics within the University of Melbourne to develop and build web subjects. Academics with ideas for creative, interactive online projects can contact us to arrange a collaborative development or, if you are already familiar with Neo, request to have a Neo-site setup for them. They can then develop their own site leveraging the existing technologies.
What can you do in Neo?
There are a wealth of tools within Neo that allow you to create engaging, interactive experiences. You can develop web pages, create and incorporate online quizzes, host discussion forums and synchronous chat, enhance student communication via blogging, deploy groupwork and role-play activities, leverage students' critical skills via peer-reviews and share and reuse this content in other subjects. Neo can present Flash, Shockwave and Quicktime content in addition to standard HTML and JavaScript. Student participation and results can be tracked and analysed and file submissions can be marked online.
Typically subjects comprise a combination of web pages, quizzes, forums and multimedia elements. When necessary Neo can be further customised to meet special requirements.
Neo is an extraordinarily powerful and flexible teaching and learning tool. It gives people the ability to create a wide range of content using Neo's existing sub-systems and allows a wide variety of teaching methods from simple multiple choice to multilayered, multi-user collaborative roleplaying interactivity.
